LAST MODIFIED:

NEWSLETTER FOR MID AUGUST, 2001

Hello,

A very warm welcome to 78 new subscribers so far for the month. Makes up for last month's "bounces". What a vexing problem. I understand many Yahoo people are now receiving their mail several days late, is this correct?

Owing to popularity, future end of month issues will now be sent in two parts.

This single issue is good also so, please save it and then print it out. I'm sure you will be glad you did.

1.     CORRECTIONS

See your personal details at the very end. If your details are correct - DO NOTHING - otherwise:

2.     MY QUESTIONS?

Well last month I said:

>Last month's question that I put the sites together on a CD-ROM attracted
>about 8 replies (from several thousand subscribers???) the majority
>thumbs down. Why do I bother?

In reply:

My good mate Dr. Vince Bello, chastised me along the lines (and quite correctly) "why shoot the messenger". Quite so...

What I meant was (O.K. I expressed it poorly):

a) I put a question to several thousand subscribers and only 8 persons bothered to reply, so why bother asking questions?

b) The majority of the eight, that is 5 people versus 3, a significant representation if I were a marketing organization, said (including Vince) "why bother?"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3.     A THOUGHT
"One day at a time - Do not look back and feel sorry about the past for it is gone. Do not worry about the future for it is not yet come. Live each day in the present and make it beautiful"
-- Unknown
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

4a. STOP PRESS - Late inclusion

Oops! Nearly forgot. I was unsuccesful in my endeavours for the University position. My grateful thanks to all the so many well wishers.

4b.     SPOTLIGHT ON A SUBSCRIBER

I love from time to time to present a "spotlight on a subscriber".

O.K. they're mostly women. So... I have six daughters and eight grand-daughters (plus also some males) but I'm highly prejudiced...

If we all live for another 120+ years, everybody here will get their turn, assuming this list doesn't grow - all up that's about the same odds as you winning lotto!.

What started all this was "Cathy's" response to the two part newsletter question from the August issue:

<quote>
Yes, I do like the 2 parter better - my kids and husband do not often allow me the pleasure of uninterrupted study time, let alone time to read newsletter. In fact, you have it timed about right for volume read/time allowed for no interruption.

You do a great job (reach and pat on back) - appreciate all the effort.

Tired old Electrical Engineering student and mother of many teenagers.

Cathy
<quote>

Now to me, an [old-time] OZ male, that is a bit like getting a "funnel web" spider out of it's "lair" underground. I took the bait and I am and *WE* are (I believe) to be richly rewarded.

Now, I asked (implored) Cathy from Texas, U.S.A. to write a few lines about herself [with my editorial licence] but it was in fact 99+% written by others:

"Catherine XXXX, a mother of six [hey think about that!].

Catherine returned to school full time after 22 years to complete her degree in Electrical Engineering in May of this year [2001] and commuted 180 miles a day to XYZ from her farm in Oklahoma for several years [often on the farm tractor].

Catherine joined XYZ´s Society of Women Engineers to mentor students by providing free tutoring. After 2 years, SWE has 15 tutors tutoring over 400 students in over 25 courses - and 200 students of XYZ who call her “Mom”.

While President of XYZ´s chapter of SWE, membership increased 400% and an Engineering and Computer Science resource library was established. SWE was nominated Outstanding Student Organization of the Year for 2000 and 2001, and Catherine was nominated Outstanding Student Leader of the Year for 2000 and 2001.

She is also a member of IEEE, Optical Society of America and Society of Physic Students.

She has participated in the International Teaching Assistant Evaluation Board, the Electrical Engineering Departmental Evaluation and Review Board and meets with the office of the Dean of Electrical Engineering offering general assistance with student affairs.

Catherine was also involved in the University Research Project with Texas Instruments to develop interfaces to TMS320C6XX series of digital signal processors.

In May 2001 she was awarded her BSEE. Catherine was graduation commencement speaker and also received the XXXXXX School of Engineering Leadership Award".

[Editorial comment - "a real class act, who still literally 'mends' farm fences on very hot week-ends, O.K. I'll pay dearly for all this..." <G>]

[Younger people, please take note of what "positive attitude AND determination" WILL produce, no I don't consider myself in Cathy's class because there are many other impediments Cathy overcame that I have omitted.

Cathy, you are indeed an inspiration."]

FINAL WORD BELONGS TO CATHY:

<quote>
To the age old question of "How bad do you want to accomplish what you want... Consider this as:

(1) inspiration to the tired and worn out to continue on, and / or
(2) quit whining and get after it!

Votes are still out on that one;=)

5.     A MALICIOUS THOUGHT!

I get email back religiously from subscribers amending addresses etc. Also further email praising my efforts yadda, yadda.

What if I with-hold the newsletter for awhile? Would sufficient people suffer withdrawal symptoms so the space above becomes sold out for a whole year?

Only joking... I think... Trust me... I'm from the government and I'm here to help you...

6. ANOTHER GOOD ORGANIZATION - Free plug

On some of the lists I subscribe to, there has been some A.R.R.L. bashing lately. I don't agree with those sentiments one iota.

Without the A.R.R.L., amateurs in the U.S.A. and world wide would be up the proverbial creek. There are many commercial interests "lusting" after our precious bands.

If you aren't a member then join now! Your financial support is essential to our hobby. Wonderful resources.

7. A GOOD FRIEND TO ME - Free plug

Dr. Vince Bello has consistently proven to be a good friend to me (read: "he doesn't tell me what I want hear, just what I need to know...)

Vince has his excellent publication on "switched mode power supplies" - what else?
See:
http://www.ejbloom.com/shopfrm.php?type=book

You will find his book as selection 415 in the Circuit Modeling, Analysis, Testing & Thermal Design part of the book section.

8.     THIS IS VERY GOOD

Sourced from my fellow professional web-developer (I'm one of them) friend Yung:

For those who hate 404 pages, and / or Windows, and / or Micro$oft

See: http://www.thispagecannotbedisplayed.com/

My Texan mate Dan WB5TKA say's

>This ain't "good". It's fantastic! I had to spread that around.

>Thanks Ian.

9.     PIC PROGRAMMER SITES

PIC programmer sites have had a bit of an airing on my "Electronics Q&A" list during the last week. Excellent topic. Join here: http://electronics-tutorials.com/Q&A.htm

These are the combined suggested resources:

From Gary in Oz (where else?):
a) http://www.dontronics.com
b) http://www.oatleyelectronics.com
c) http://www.tased.edu.au/tasonline/eeat/
d) http://www.epemag.wimborne.co.uk/netwkaz.htm#P

From Dan Q AA9WG:
microEngineering Labs, Inc
http://www.melabs.com The product name is: "EPIC Plus Pocket PICmicro Programmer"

From Oskar:
http://www.piclist.com/techref/piclist/index.htm

From Francisco
http://www.ic-prog.com

From Paul
http://funcard.vip.lublin.pl/ludipipo/ludipipo.htm
http://www.microchip.com/10/tools/picmicro/devenv/mplabi/software/v540/index.htm

That last one may "word wrap", if so copy and paste it. Hope I haven't omitted any contributor.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
10.     WHERE DO I LIVE?
Sometimes I'm asked questions such as: "where do you live?"..., "what's it like living there in Australia?"...
In answer to these burning issues I have prepared this page. I hope you find it interesting. I'll try to update it as much as possible.
See:
https://www.electronics-tutorials.com/qth/vk2tip-qth.htm
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

11.     ANOTHER THOUGHT?

My wife Carolyn doesn't always laugh at the many jokes I receive almost daily and usually have me on the floor laughing. I have a finely tuned "sense of humour".

I said, "sweetheart you simply don't have a sense of humour".

"No?... well I married you...

"Boom boom!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
12.     YOU GOT QUESTIONS?
Then for heavens sake PLEASE use the sites' search facilities BEFORE asking me questions.
Basic isn't it? Both sites have a search facility on the main page and some other pages as well. If you need to ask me something and you insist on using Outlook then PLEASE turn off sending email as HTML. Always send as "plain text".
<grouch mode off>
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

13.     IT'S STILL NEW!!!

O.K., just to prove how clever I am, I have mastered the intricacies of rotating banner ads on my sites. On the new site this is accomplished with server side includes and on the old site it is done with javascript. Each page now displays a random generated ad for a "recommended book" from Amazon. Kewl!

SO? - I just had to brag again, go and buy a book...

14.     AN SWR-WATTMETER KIT

Brought to you by the good fellows at North Georgia QRP Club. You will need acrobat reader.

As the boys say:

"The need for a simple SWR/Wattmeter that will go down to 200 mW seems to be great..."

See:
http://www.qsl.net/nogaqrp/ click on "club projects".

Lots of other projects there as well.

15. HUMOUR AND INSPIRATION (by ever popular demand) -

A reader to www.jokeaday.com sends:

Late one Saturday evening, I was awakened by the ringing of my phone.

In a sleepy grumpy voice I said hello. The party on the other end of the line paused for a moment before rushing breathlessly into a lengthy speech.

"Mom, this is Susan and I'm sorry I woke you up, but I had to call because I'm going to be a little late getting home. See, Dad's car has a flat but it's not my fault. Honest! I don't know what happened. The tire just went flat while we were inside the theatre. Please don't be mad, okay?"

Since I don't have any daughters, I knew the person had mis-dialed. "I'm sorry dear, "I replied, "but you've reached the wrong number. I don't have a daughter named Susan."

A pause.

"Gosh, Mom, "came the young woman's voice, "I didn't think you'd be this mad.
