VK2TIP IAN PURDIE'S MONTHLY NEWSLETTER FOR AUGUST, 2001 PARTS [1] AND [2]

Hi Ian,

A very warm welcome to 201 new subscribers for the month.

Because I didn't do a mid July newsletter, this 'August' issue comes in two parts, please save it and then print it out. I'm sure you will be glad you did.

I have been very busy in many areas this month. Found a good project, some good downloads, lots of stuff.

1.     CORRECTIONS

See your personal details at the very end of part [2]. If your details are correct - DO NOTHING - otherwise:
https://www.electronics-tutorials.com/corrections.htm

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2.     MY QUESTIONS?
Last month's question that I put the sites together on a CD-ROM attracted about 8 replies (from several thousand subscribers???) the majority thumbs down. Why do I bother?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

3.     SERVER CRASHES

Would you believe I've had two separate server crashes within a month. The original site was out for over a day and this week the new site's HD crashed big time taking out about 80 other sites all told. Took over a day to fix and back everybody up again.

AND neither of them run Micro$oft server software... thankfully <G>

Did I mention I hate Micro$oft, how come I'm always wrong? The blue screen-of-death always says ctrl/alt/del will restart etc. Never does. I did mention I hate Micro$oft, didn't I?

O.K. rant mode off...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
4.     CD ENCRYPTION BROKEN ALREADY
The latest encryption designed to stop CDs from being copied has already been broken.
See:
>http://www.cdfreaks.com/document.php3?Doc=48
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

-------------------------------------
    THIS COULD BE YOU!
-------------------------------------

So how come no one has signed up to place their ad here? It's ONLY $30 per issue! Talk to the boss, magazine, manufacturer, component supplier.

Don't make me get out the whips!

e-mail:
mailto:sponsor@electronics-tutorials.com?subject=Sponsor-Newsletter
for info.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
5.     AN EXCELLENT ELECTRONICS MAGAZINE - entirely non-profit
Have you invested $US 20.00 in the most excellent QRP-Quarterly magazine yet - cheaper if you live in the USA?
Visit QRP Amateur Radio Club, International - special page for you alone:
Welcome friends from Ian Purdie http://america.net/~w4qo/purdie.html
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

6.     DAMN "LIES AND STATISTICS"

The growth was up again slightly throughout July.... everyone still enjoying fine weather?

As at the last day of the month:

Last month, July was 52,593 unique visitors (June 51,006) looking at a total of 157,225 page views (June 149,261) - New subscribers to this newsletter were of course 201, unsubscribes were a total of 10 and I had to delete 33 "bounced" last month as well as over 100+ "blanks".

8.     FREE DOWNLOADS - More in Part [2} also

IntelliCAD 2001 by CADopia is a powerful Computer-Aided-Design software for engineers, architects, designers and drafters -- virtually anyone who creates, edits, or views professional drawings. Useful!

I believe the trial download can be used 999 times.

9.     NEW!!!

O.K., just to prove how clever I am, I have mastered the intricacies of rotating banner ads on my sites. On the new site this is accomplished with server side includes and on the old site it is done with javascript. Each page now displays a random generated ad for a "recommended book" from Amazon. Kewl!

SO? - I just had to brag to somebody...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
10.     A TOP FREQUENCY COUNTER KIT
Unusual, very unusual. No display needed. The guys from The ScQRPions have produced this really cheap "Stinger Singer Frequency Counter" kit. Cost is $US 20.00 per kit. Why no display? It's a CW Audible Frequency Counter, you don't see it, you hear it, all in morse code. Very novel.
11.     FREE COMMERCIAL - because he's a good bloke
If you prefer a conventional frequency counter kit, with lots of options see 'me old mate' Neil Heckt of Almost All Digital Electronics. Good fellow.
Neil also has a stunning LC meter Kit (I bought one!) plus more.
12.     HUMOUR AND INSPIRATION (by ever popular demand) -
I realize not everyone on the list is of the 'christian faith' so please bear with me here...
A young man received the following letter from his mother last week. She is eighty-eight years old and still drives her own car.
She wrote:
Dear Son,
The other day I went up to our local Christian book store and saw a "honk if you love Jesus" bumper sticker.
I was feeling particularly 'sassy' that day because I had just come from a thrilling choir performance, followed by a thunderous prayer meeting. So I bought the sticker and put it on my bumper.
Boy, I'm glad I did, what an uplifting experience that followed.
I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection, just lost in thought about the Lord and how good he is, and I didn't notice that the light had changed. It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn't honked, I'd never have noticed.
I found that lots of people love Jesus! Why, while I was sitting there, the guy behind started honking like crazy, and then he leaned out of his window and screamed, "For the love of God! Go! Go! Go! Jesus Christ Go!"
What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus!
Everyone started honking! I just leaned out my window and started waving and smiling at all those loving people. I even honked my horn a few times to share in the love!
There must have been a man from Florida back there because I heard him yelling something about a "sunny beach".. I saw another guy waving in a funny way.. with only his middle finger stuck up in the air.
Then I asked my teenage grandson in the back seat what that meant. He said it was probably a Hawaiian good luck sign or something. Well, I've never met anyone from Hawaii, so I leaned out the window and gave him the good luck sign back.
My grandson burst out laughing... why, even he was enjoying this religious experience!
A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that they got out of their cars and started walking towards me. I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended.
This is when I noticed the light had changed. So, I waved at all my brothers and sisters grinning, and drove on through the intersection.
I noticed I was the only car that got through the intersection before the light changed again and felt kind of sad that I had to leave them after all the love we had shared. So I slowed the car down, leaned out the window and gave them all the Hawaiian good luck sign as I drove away.
Praise the Lord for such wonderful folks!!!
Will write again soon,
Love Mom
SUBJECT: Ian here's your VK2TIP Ian Purdie's Monthly Newsletter for August, 2001 [Part 2]
Hi Ian,
Well here I am back in your face for part [2]. Do you like the two part idea?
14.     A VERY INTERESTING PROJECT
I've always wanted a milli-ohmmeter. I've searched and searched to no avail in the past.
Suddenly I came upon this absolutely fascinating application note from Maxim.
It's described as "Application Note: Battery-Powered Circuit Measures Milli Ohms and Micro Ohms". What an absolute wonder.
Now I have a spare set of the Maxim chips required and I'm wondering..., wondering... how can I run a competition to give this spare set away? If I get the usual 6 - 8 replies I'll forget it and keep them as spares.
On the other hand, OTOH, if I'm overwhelmed with responses then I can be encouraged to expand on this idea to other devices and other manufacturers.
15.     FREE COMMERCIAL - because he's another good bloke
A friend of mine is Marshall Emm, N1FN of Milestone Technologies, Inc. He worked in Oz for a time years ago.
Marshall told us recently:
"We still seem to be developing new products and lines faster than we can announce them! Again, I'll try to be brief.. but for more info you can visit our web site and click on the "What's New" button. Or call us on (303) 752-3382 (USA)".
16.     AN INTERESTING SITE
I always check out who's linking back to me and sending new visitors. O.K. call me nosey.
I came across this site with valuable links and technical information, especially for audio enthusiasts. They sell a nice line of dust covers etc. also.
This page on the site is titled "Articles, Technical Documents, home recording, dust covers".
Well worth your visit. See:
17.     A BLATANT ABUSE OF MY COPYRIGHT
<rant mode on>
Now here's a fellow abusing my copyright big time. He is a university student who has "stolen" my intellectual property, page by page and represents it as his own work on a web site.
I have never given permission for my work to be used in this fashion. His penalty? I'll allow his Vice-Chancellor to determine that, you can imagine.
I do not consider this a particularly auspicious start to an academic career in an engineering discipline.
19.     THE ROTTEN VIRUS
Assuming you haven't been living under a rock, this latest virus going around is a real pain. The only reason I mention it is because it morphs, mutates, whatever by grabbing recent email subjects you've used/received.
Now in one day recently I received 159 copies of the infernal thingy. What startled me was one from a known friend with the subject line, "Tube Amplifier Case Costs". Very unsuspecting.
My very progressive ISP has virus software installed on the mail server. It is called "Sophos".
If your ISP doesn't protect you like mine does then ask, "why not?". "Sophos" can be obtained here:
20.     FREE DOWNLOADS - More in Part [1} also
FilterCAD from Linear Technology:
This FREE active filter software from Linear Technology is excellent. Obviously it is based upon LT's range of product and "FilterCAD now supports the new active RC parts (LTC1562/LTC1563 families) in addition to switched capacitor parts".
"The main action in FCAD takes place in the Design and Implement windows, which each exist in two versions: Quick Design/Implement and Enhanced Design/Implement. Use these windows to specify the parameters for your design, to select an LTC filter IC and to specify operating conditions for the circuit. You can then view a frequency response chart and a schematic diagram of your design. The Enhanced Implement window offers additional options, including probing the nodes of the individual sections of your filter, editing resistor values, and viewing or printing a report".
23.     HUMOUR AND INSPIRATION (again by ever popular demand) -
A man's daughter had asked the local minister to come and pray with her father.
When the minister arrived, he found the man lying in bed with his head propped up on two pillows. An empty chair sat beside his bed. The minister assumed that the old fellow had been informed of his visit.
"I guess you were expecting me," he said.
"No, who are you?" said the father.
The minister told him his name and then remarked, "I see the empty chair; I figured you knew I was going to show up."
"Oh yeah, the chair," said the bed ridden man. "Would you mind closing the door?"
Puzzled, the minister shut the door.
"I have never told anyone this, not even my daughter, "said the man. "But all of my life I have never known how to pray. At church I used to hear the pastor talk about prayer, but it went right over my head."
"I abandoned any attempt at prayer," the old man continued, "until one day about four years ago my best friend said to me, 'Johnny, prayer is just a simple matter of having a conversation with Jesus. Here is what I suggest. Sit down in a chair; place an empty chair in front of you, and in faith see Jesus on the chair. It's not spooky because he promised, 'I'll be with you always.' Then just speak to him in the same way you're doing with me right now. "
“So, I tried it and I've liked it so much that I do it a couple of hours every day. I'm careful though. If my daughter saw me talking to an empty chair, she'd either have a nervous breakdown or send me off to the funny farm."
The minister was deeply moved by the story and encouraged the old man to continue on the journey. Then he prayed with him, anointed him with oil, and returned to the church. Two nights later the daughter called to tell the minister that her daddy had died that afternoon.
"Did he die in peace?" he asked.
"Yes, and when I left the house about two o'clock, he called me over to his bedside and told me he loved me and kissed me on the cheek. When I got back from the store an hour later, I found him dead. But there was something strange about his death. Apparently, just before Daddy died, he leaned over and rested his head on the chair beside the bed. What do you make of that?"
The minister wiped a tear from his eye and said, "I wish we could all go like that."
Prayer is one of the best free gifts we receive. There is no cost but a lot of rewards.
May 'YOUR' God bless YOUR day.
